Assignment 5 - Composition - Rule Of Thirds

Smartphone Photography – Just Do It Workshop

Composition is how the elements of a photo are arranged. A composition can be made up of many different elements, or only a few. It’s how the artist puts those things within a frame that help a photograph become more or less interesting to the viewer. A good photograph is aesthetically pleasing and it is how an artist tells a story within the confines of a single frame.

Action and get started with

  • RULE OF THIRDS
According to the rule of thirds, an image is split into nine equal blocks that form a three-by-three grid.

You should aim to get the most interesting parts of your image near the corners of these segments, where the imaginary grid lines meet.

To improve your shot composition, give the rule of thirds a try.

It’s even more simple when you don’t have to imagine the dividing lines yourself. This being the age of instant smartphone photography, just about every camera app out there will display them for you.

On the Android camera app, you’ll see the grid icon at the edge of the screen, while in iOS the grid option is under Photos & Camera in Settings.

ACTION: Rule of Thirds Portrait

Take a portrait shot and play with the rule of thirds.

For example, consider changing the horizon upwards or downwards in your frame.
Make at least 10 different variants.
